I have an app that some people use. It talks to a web server. That web server responds to different URLs. (I call them “endpoints”.) One of those endpoints was slow.

It used to take 113ms (median) to finish. 113ms is pretty quick on the scale of human thought. But 113 was more milliseconds than it needed to take.

I optimized this endpoint.

Response times are listed in the far-right column, in seconds.

It now takes 2ms.

Call it 100 milliseconds saved per request.

That endpoint gets hit 10,000 times per day.

That is 1,000 seconds saved per day.

That is 15 minutes per day.

Imagine if you had 15 minutes more each day.

That would make each day 1% longer.

That would make your life 1% longer.

What would that be worth to you?

This is why we make things fast.
